In the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, two councillors from the Scottish National Party (SNP) began a petition Friday, the day after Comhairle nan Eilean Siar — the local government council for the Western Isles — said it would discontinue flight services between the islands of Benbecula and Barra as part of its 2013 / 2014 budget.

The petition — entitled “To petition the Scottish Parliament that Comhairle nan Eilean Siar maintains its support for the lifeline air services between Stornoway, Benbecula and Barra” — has also been launched in response to another council decision to restrict flight services between the islands of Benbecula and Lewis to three days a week, although the move has been temporarily suspended for two weeks to allow for NHS Western Isles to provide funding for said services. Otherwise, the changes come into effect late next month. Gordon Murray and Rae MacKenzie, the two councillors who launched the petition, are both from the town of Stornoway in the isle of Lewis. At the council’s meeting, Councillor MacKenzie suggested an alternative budget retaining flight service financing. The petition says the council’s decisions “risk the future of all internal flights within the Outer Hebrides and would severely undermine the transport connections which have been built up between the islands over the last forty years, with serious implications for the local economy and community.”

The council’s decision to remove the £148,000 (about US$230,000 or €172,000) subsidy means Benbecula – Barra flights are to cease operation within the next few weeks. When the decision comes into effect, travelling between the islands will only be available through the use of ferry services. The council, which was trying to achieve about £5 million (US$7.75 million or €5.8 million) in spending reductions, said some 75% of seats on these flights were vacant.

Angus MacNeil, MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar in the British Government, and Alasdair Allan, MSP for the same constituency in the Scottish Government, both of whom are SNP members, have criticised the council’s decision. MacNeil said he was “disappointed” about the move and claimed Comhairle nan Eilean Siar was “axing these services while pocketing the cash” provided to them by the Scottish Government. Meanwhile, Allan said the council’s action was “a significant blow to the community”. He said, from Benbecula: “As someone who used the Barra to Benbecula flight today, it is clear to me what importance this service has in keeping the Western Isles connected.”

Council leader Angus Campbell subsequently criticised MacNeil for his remarks, saying he was “extremely disappointed” by them. “The use of the term ‘pocketing the money’ shows a disrespect for the democratic process of local Government”, he said. He also requested that MacNeil and Allan “stand shoulder to shoulder with the Comhairle to campaign for increased funding for the Western Isles to help deal with these issues rather than turning on their democratically elected local council over individual issues they don’t particularly like.”

Campbell described the council’s 2013 / 2014 budget as “the most difficult we have faced during my time as a councillor.”

A homeowner who just moved into a new home or who has renovated it may also be considering changing the windows. This may involve a decision between the blinds and the curtains. This decision may be a bit difficult to do, but there are certain advantages in using blinds that you cannot get from curtains.

Easy to Clean

If you clean curtains, you need to remove them from the window and get them to the washing machine. Since they are too bulky to be placed in the dryer, you still need to find a spot to hang and dry them without ruining the fabric. This is obviously a hassle process, which is opposite to cleaning blinds. You only need to dust them off with a rag, dusting cloth or vacuum cleaner. For vinyl or plastic slats, they can be washed and soaked in a tub with warm water quite easily. Cleaning the curtains is still more of a hassle.

Durable

Curtains are not ideal for homes with pets. Cats and dogs are particularly playful with anything that moves or sways. They might keep on playing and clawing the curtains with their teeth and claws, resulting to ruined fabric. Curtains also present danger to your pets because they might get entangled while playing. On the other hand, pets may have a hard time of reaching the window blinds, especially if you are using verticals. Moreover, you can easily replace a damaged slat or a broken cord. The replacement process is quite simple so you can do it alone without calling a professional.

Reduces Allergens

Curtains can easily become homes or nesting grounds of animal dander or dust mites, which can easily trigger allergies in the people living at your home. This is especially dangerous if you have kids or older people at home or when you have someone with asthma, a serious condition. Since window blinds are easier to clean, you can prevent the growth of allergens at home.

Looks Modern

Curtains are more traditional than the use of window blinds. If you want your home to look neat and modern, the blinds are the solution to this. They might appear simple but they still look attractive.

Light Control

Curtains are good at keeping the light out but if you want more light, a problem arises because curtains still block light even when they are kept to the sides. Window blinds can give a room a lighter and brighter atmosphere if you want to flood the room with more light. They are also good at blocking off light by closing the slats.

Easy to Use

Curtains are sometimes hard to close or open. Your kids may not even be able to manage them. On the other hand, window blinds are simple operated with a movement of the wrist to close or open them.

Good Ventilation

Curtains usually absorb all the odours that pass through your home. If you keep your curtains closed, the entire house will still smell like the foods that you had for dinner the other night. Plastic window blinds keep off odours from their material.

Wikinews interviewed the creator of a parody website satirizing American political commentator Glenn Beck, about his thoughts after prevailing in a domain name dispute brought by Beck before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Florida resident Isaac Eiland-Hall created the website in September, and it asserts Beck uses questionable tactics “to spread lies and misinformation”. Eiland-Hall was represented in the case by free speech lawyer Marc Randazza.

Wikinews interviewed Randazza for the article “US free speech lawyer Marc Randazza discusses Glenn Beck parody”, and previously reported on the Beck v. Eiland-Hall case in articles, “US free speech lawyer defends satire of Glenn Beck”, “Satirical website criticizes Glenn Beck for ‘hypocritical’ attempts to silence free speech”, and “Glenn Beck loses domain name case over parody website”.

Evan Wolfson, the founder of the modern gay marriage movement, tells the waiter he would like an iced decaf and “the usual.” Wolfson, one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People in the World, is a man who unflinchingly knows what he wants and stays his course, whether it be in his choice of restaurant or in his choice of battle. And others always know when they see Evan coming what it is that he wants.

Since his time at Harvard Law School when he wrote a paper on the topic, what Wolfson wants is the right for gay people to marry. The issue gained national prominence in 1993 when the Hawaii Supreme Court held in Baehr v. Lewin that the government had to show a reason for the denial of the freedom to marry, not just deny marriage licenses to the plaintiff gay couples. Wolfson was co-counsel in the historic 1996 Hawaii trial in which he argued that the government does not have a sufficient reason for excluding same-sex couples from marriage. In 1999, Wolfson contributed to Baker v. Vermont, the case that led to the creation of civil unions; advised the lead attorneys in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, the case that led to same-sex marriage in Massachusetts; and since 2003, when he founded the primary umbrella organization coordinating the efforts to win marriage for gay people, Freedom to Marry, Wolfson has played a role in every marriage equality case in the United States. He is the movement’s founder and leader, and his focus remains square on winning that right. “For years,” said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, “many of us were saying to him, ‘We’re not ready. The country’s not ready. And, by the way, you’re crazy.'”

When I make a statement to him about his devoting his life to gay marriage, he corrects me: “I’ve played a part in cases that span the entire spectrum of eliminating gay people’s exclusions and limitations on who gay people are, and I’ve also written on immigration and economic justice, and I have worked on cases involving race discrimination in jury selection and women’s inequality. I don’t think one has to pick one of these things; they work together.”

Indeed, he has. Wolfson was lead counsel before the Supreme Court in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, the case arguing against the expulsion of gay scoutmasters. As an intrepid young assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, Wolfson worked on People v. Liberta to end the exemption that allowed women to be raped by their husbands legally, a right in New York State as early as 1984. And he helped end the practice of choosing jurors based upon their race.

Wolfson’s entire career has been at the center of the most explosive legal and cultural issues of the last 30 years in the United States, and his influence has been profound. David Shankbone sat down with him to discuss some of the recent decisions affecting gay marriage, gender in marriage and reactions in the gay community to his fight for their rights.

There is a great deal more to dressing room design than aesthetics. Space management has become a very high priority because facilities now provide more amenities than they once did. The needs for security and privacy have increased accordingly. Efficient use of resources and the longevity of equipment should also be considered when purchasing commercial dressing room supplies.

As a matter of course, changing rooms provide guests with shower facilities. Ideally, shower units should accommodate as many users as possible and provide each individual user with privacy. Column showers are becoming increasingly popular in dressing room design. They draw from a single water supply and distribute it through multiple faucets to several users. Column showers are most often installed along the wall, where faucets separate the water flow between individual privacy stalls.

In larger changing rooms, however, some column showers are also installed in the center of the room. Here, a piper beneath the floor feeds water upward into the shower assembly. Faucets then distribute water between privacy partitions just as they do with wall mounted fixtures.

Choosing the right designer lockers is another important decision to make in dressing room design. Locker storage must offer guests dry, wrinkle free storage, and security. There are several designer locker styles that provide all three of these benefits. The choice of locker model typically depends on the type of clothing the guest wears into the changing room.

Persons just arriving from work are often wearing suits, dresses, and nice skirts. These individuals require designer lockers with hooks they can use to hang their dress clothes. They will also need shelving and extra space for shoes and personal items.

Individuals who arrive in more casual clothes require less storage space. Many casual clothes can be folded neatly without being wrinkled, so not as much space is needed.

All lockers keep their contents dry thanks to laminate coating that keeps moisture out. Also, all lockers can be fitted with padlocks or combination locks to secure belongings. Efficient designs like these give the locker plenty of interior space, but they also keep the locker

Dressing room designs with built-in restrooms can maximize the utilization of existing space by choosing toilet partitions that are specifically designed to accommodate different types of restroom environments. Some dressing rooms simply have less floor space than others. Other changing areas may have limited wall space. Still others may be constrained by very low ceilings.

Each scenario can present the architect with a potential challenge when it comes time to choose partitions. With options that include, but are not limited to, ceiling hung, floor mounted, wall mounted, and floor to ceiling mounted, architects are sure to find the best possible option for their project on XPB Locker Supply’s website.

In terms of material construction, we recommend either solid plastic or phenolic core toilet partitions for dressing room design. These are both extremely durable surface materials highly suitable for the heavy traffic witnessed in most changing rooms. They are also moisture resistant thanks to 100 percent non-absorbency. This makes them ideal for the humid conditions that exist in changing where bacteria, mold, and mildew would build up on porous surfaces.

There are a lot of reasons why you should think about setting your home up with concrete flooring. Not only will the flooring be durable enough and strong enough to withstand an extraordinary amount of foot traffic, but it’s also a great way to make your home fire resistant, it will prove to be very economical, and it does an excellent job on helping to insulate your home, helping lower your monthly utility bills. The reason so many homeowners hesitant to have concrete flooring installed in their home during construction has to do with looks, they’re worried the floors will be ugly, and that instead of creating a warm, comfortable home they will find themselves living in a place that bears a strong resemblance to a factory.

In reality decorative concrete will be stunning and prove to be a breathtaking and striking asset to any room. In addition to being able to use decorative concrete in your home, it can also be very useful for porches and as a landscaping accent. You will be amazed at the number of different ideas you come up with to use the decorative and durable pieces. Several people have found concrete to be a great material for garden benches and tables. Not only do they look nice and natural, but they’re also very durable and withstand even the worse weather.

There are a couple of different ways that you can turn boring concrete slabs into works of art. The first option will be going to a store that specializes in fancy designs. At these shops you will be able to acquire pieces that have been carved into ornate works of art. If the exact pattern you’re looking for can’t be found, you can always work directly with the artist and have the piece you want custom made.

Another option you will want to seriously consider when you desire decorative concrete will be creating your own art. This can be easily done with a little paint and some stencils.

Cleaning the piece of concrete you wish to decorate is the single most important aspect of creating your very own decorative concrete. Using a soft brush on the area you wish to paint will remove all bits of dust and pet hair from the surface prior to attaching the stencil and painting the concrete.

The one downside to painting the decorative concrete will be that the paint, when exposed to the sun for a long period of time, can start to fade. Don’t get rid of the stencils you used to create the artwork, you’ll use them to touch up the paint so your decorative work continues to impress house guests for a long time to come.

The Decorative Concrete Oklahoma experts at Billscustomconcrete will be able to provide answers to any questions you have regarding the acquisition and possible uses for decorative concrete Oklahoma.

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

VIENNA –Doctors from the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna say “there is no doubt” Ukrainian opposition leader Victor Yushchenko was poisoned with Dioxin.

Yushchenko’s body had about 1,000 times more than the normal concentration of the toxin. It is unknown if there were any other poisons in his system.

Although it has not yet been proven that the poisoning was deliberate, doctors suspect it was. “We suspect a cause triggered by a third party,” said Michael Zimpfer, head doctor at the Rudolfinerhaus clinic. He suggested the poison may have been administered orally, through food or drink.

Today’s announcements are a follow-up of an earlier press conference, where Dr. Korpan that there were three hypotheses under consideration, one of them involving dioxin. He did not reveal what the other two hypotheses were. Dr. Michael Zimpfer, director of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic emphasized that time there was no proof yet to specify the substance causing the illness.

Yushchenko left Kiev on Friday (2004-10-12) for further examination in Vienna. When Yushchenko fell ill on October 6th, Ukrainian doctors had initially diagnosed food poisoning, leading to speculation that he had been poisoned deliberately. The illness has disfigured Yushchenko’s body and face which doctors say could take up to two years to heal.

He fell seriously ill on the September 6th, during his presidential campaign. Yushchenko was taken to the Rudolfinerhaus clinic of Vienna, where he stayed for four days under Dr. Korpan’s care. He was diagnosed with “acute pancreatitis, accompanied by interstitial edematous changes.” These symptoms were said to be due to “a serious viral infection and chemical substances which are not normally found in food products” as his campaign officials put it. In laymans terms, he developed an infection in the pancreas and got a bad skin condition that disfigured his face with cysts and lesions. The skin condition has similarities with the chloracne associated with dioxin posioning according to a British toxicologist John Henry.

Earlier, doctor Nikolai Korpan of Rudolfinerhaus clinic confirmed today that the illness of Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko was caused by an attempt to kill him.
