Last week a presentation of the bridge linking the Crimea with the Krasnodar region of Russia took place in Ukraine. The project cost of the deal is estimated at US$480 million. According to specialists, the bridge can be built within two years given adequate preparation.

The bridge project includes building a highway with the width of 15 metres; there will also be a possibility of the bridge supporting a future oil pipeline. The total length of the bridge will be about 4.5 kilometres.

The bridge over the Strait of Kerch could become a transit way to more than 10 million people a year and should decrease the travel distance from Ukraine to the Krasnodar Region by 450 kilometres.

If you are like most people you have a household that is overrun with stuff and all this stuff can be causing you some undue stress as it seems to endlessly pile up, what is the answer; a self storage facility near you. Self storage is the easiest way to clean up both your home and your life and bring peace and civility back to your household.

Self storage seems like it is currently peaking at an all time high as far as popularity goes and for that reason you no doubt have two or more self storage facilities within striking distance of your home. So which one is the best for you?

There are several factors that you should consider when choosing a self storage facility and price alone should not be the only thing you consider. Here are some items that you should strongly consider before you store your stuff:

— Hours of Operation: Some self storage facilities are open longer than others and some will even allow you access afterhours if you get permission beforehand. Be sure that the self storage facility you are considering can accommodate the hours that you will need in order to access your unit. If you work nine to five and the storage unit facility is only open from nine to six then you have very little time to get done what you need to get done.

— Security: This is very important as your stuff will not be insured by the storage unit facility itself and if you don’t take out insurance and your unit gets broken into then your stuff is gone forever and you have no recourse. See how secure the storage unit facility is that you are considering. At a minimum there should be a gate that can only be accessed going both in and out with an access code. Some storage unit facilities will even have a manager who lives ‘on-site’ and will be there for the majority of the day and night. While this isn’t going to stop all robberies it certainly will deter them. Also consider the surrounding areas of the facility and what the current crime rate of the area is. If you are in doubt, ask the local police department.

— Flexibility: Say you have enough extra stuff to fill a 5X10 storage unit. What if you get more stuff in the future that needs to be stored? Be sure that the storage unit facility has a good amount of storage unit sizes for you to choose from so that you can get a bigger one if you need to. This saves you from having to switch from facility to facility as your needs change.

— Price: With all things being equal at two or more storage unit facilities in your area then price should be considered. Just be sure that the low priced facility is not a lower price because they make you sign a contract. Contracts take away from the flexibility point.

No matter who you are or what you do chances are that you have some stuff that is needlessly taking up space in your home. If this is the case and you simply can’t part with any of your stuff then it is certainly in your best interest to check out the self storage facilities in your local area and store away your clutter.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a US government agency. In an interview with Wikinews, Jeff Dimond, a member of the Division of Media Relations for the CDC, answered a few question regarding the current situation of the H1N1 swine flu pandemic.

The CDC reported that during week 42 (October 18–24) of this year, the swine flu activity increased in the United States with 19 confirmed deaths by swine flu, while week 43 (Oct. 25–31) faced 15 confirmed deaths.

((Wikinews)) How does the CDC feel the media has handled the H1N1 flu pandemic?

((Jeff Dimond)) Media coverage has been quite good.

((WN)) What measures are the CDC taking to combat the swine flu?

((JD)) Public health information is being distributed nationwide, scientists worked hard to identify the H1N1 virus and produce a vaccine in record time.

((WN)) What areas around the world are affected most by the swine flu?

((JD)) This is a question for the WHO (World Health Organization).

((WN)) Are the current anti-flu vaccines effective and how sufficient is the current supply?

((JD)) All current anti-flu vaccines are effective. Manufacturers are producing doses as fast as possible. Spot shortages may occur, but there is not an overall shortage of vaccine. For the most severe cases, a drug called Peramivir has been authorized for emergency use by the FDA.

((WN)) How can one avoid infection and how deadly is this disease?

((JD)) Proper hand sanitation and avoidance of individuals who have flu-like symptoms is the best way to avoid becoming ill. To date more than 1000 Americans have died from LABORATORY CONFIRMED cases of H1N1 and of those 129 are under the age of 18. The most at-risk populations are pregnant women, younger people in the 18–49 age group and those with other complicating conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes and morbid obesity.

((WN)) What efforts have the CDC made to insure vaccines are available for those with no or poor health-care?

((JD)) Distribution of vaccine is up to the state health departments. CDC is not a regulatory agency.

((WN)) If someone suspects they have swine flu what would the best course of action be?

((JD)) They should seek medical attention.

((WN)) When will the swine flu die down and cease being a pandemic?

((JD)) No idea.

((WN)) Besides the CDC, what other entities, governmental and private, are involved in stopping this disease and how?

((JD)) All public health and medical agencies with a stake in H1N1 are cooperating to control the spread of H1N1.

((WN)) Is there a significant risk of H1N1 mutating and becoming more deadly?

((JD)) Flu viruses are unpredictable so there is no way of answering this question. The CDC is constantly monitoring these viruses.

Hundreds of thousands of air travelers had their travel plans disrupted in Europe by volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

Tens of thousands of air travelers were stranded when all flights into and out of the United Kingdom were grounded, as it became one of the first nations to be affected. The grounding was even more extensive than that following the September 11 attacks of 2001 when only trans-Atlantic flights were canceled.

Eurocontrol released a statement saying “…most air traffic in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden is suspended.”

The grounding is because the volcanic ash drawn into the jet stream is of a particle size which allows it to remain aloft in the atmosphere. Ingestion of this foreign matter, because of its distribution, would lead to flame outs in all aircraft engines. The composition of the ash also means that it would first melt into glass if it were to enter the engine of an aircraft before solidifying again as it cooled. This could lead to damage to the compressors and fan blades, which would make it impossible to restart the engines, even if the aircraft were to exit the cloud.

The current contingency is informed by the experience of British Airways Flight 9, which on June 24, 1982 suffered just such complete engine flame outs when it flew through the plume of Mount Galunggung in Indonesia. In that case, the flight crew after many efforts was able to restart the engines, though one failed shortly after, and the aircraft landed without casualties.

The UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has stated that “restrictions will remain in place in UK controlled airspace until 1300 (UK time) tomorrow, Friday 16 April, at the earliest,” and that “We will review further Met Office information and at 0230 (UK time) tomorrow we will advise the arrangements that will be in place through to 1800 (UK time) tomorrow.” The NATS statement concluded “…the situation cannot be said to be improving”.

In addition to Northern Europe, the ash is drifting south; Berlin and Hamburg airports in Germany are closed, and airports in the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France are described as now being closed or closing. Some flights from Spain and Portugal, together with upwards of 4,000 flights across Northern Europe, have been affected, and the knock-on effect of aircraft and crews out of position could disrupt air travel worldwide for up to 72 hours.

One affected group are British musicians booked to play at this weekend’s Coachella Festival in California. Amongst those stranded are Frightened Rabbit, Gary Numan, The Cribs and Bad Lieutenant.

On Wednesday, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure chose to let Doctor Carroll Frazier Landrum keep his physician’s license, following an investigation sparked by an anonymous complaint. Media reported the Mississippi doctor has been working out of his Toyota Camry for about two years, making house calls to see patients.

The investigation, started earlier this year, reportedly centered around Dr. Landrum having no physical office thus possibly being unable to properly store patient records.

Volunteers are presently renovating the former post office in the town of Edwards, Mississippi, United States for the doctor to have an office. Estimations indicate the new office should be ready by early next month. Landrum, 89, closed his Edwards office two years ago. Landrum has routinely seen three or four patients per day since that time. Reportedly, illegal drug activity in the vicinity of his office placed him in danger. The doctor stated he was told his physical safety was in jeopardy.

Becoming tearful, Dr. Landrum told reporters he’s glad he’s been able to help so many people and “give them some hope and relief, and help them survive.” Landrum has assured the medical board he will refresh his training with a medical record-keeping course. According to Landrum’s attorneys, at first the board were unwilling to release their investigative records, although ultimately they did release some of the documents.

Going from being a renter to a homeowner is an impressive accomplishment that not everyone achieves in their lifetime. There is something very satisfying about having the knowledge that you have been able to work your way to the point where you can own your own home.

For someone who is one the verge of homeownership or who may be considering moving to a different home, you know how important getting a low home loan interest rate can be to the timing of your decision. Just a percentage point or two in either direction can make a huge difference in the total cost of your loan – as well as how much you have to pay each month in mortgage payments.

If you are interested in learning more about current home loan rates, here are 5 tips for how to evaluate today mortgage rate from an historical perspective:

1. Determine the type of loan for which you would like to compare interest rates:

The secret to making sense of current home loan rates is to understand them in their historical perspective. In other words, you need to look at how they are “trending,” meaning: are they generally higher or generally lower today than at various times in the recent past?

To do this type of research successfully, it is useful to start out by deciding what type of loan you believe you will be taking out when you apply for your mortgage. The most popular options are fixed rate mortgages and adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs).

Specifically, the most popular four types of loans are: 30-year fixed rate, 15-year fixed rate, 5-year ARM and 1-year ARM. (Note that with an ARM, after the 5- or 1-year period goes by, the loan switches from being a fixed-rate loan to being an adjustable rate loan).

2. Look for historical trends for that rate:

Now that you have selected a certain loan type, you will want to take a look at two things:

* the current average interest rate for that loan type as it stands today

* how that interest looked at various points in the past, including over the past three months, one year, and 20 years

note: you can find some good historical charts by running a search for “historical average mortgage rates.”

3. Get a feel for how today’s rates compare to historical trends:

Now, ask yourself: how does today’s rate look generally as compared to each of those three periods of time – lower or higher? Obviously, if today’s rate seems low as compared to one or more of these historical views, it may be a sign that this is a good time to move forward with a home loan purchase.

4. Realize that the rate for which you qualify may be different than the average rates:

Of course, the home loan rate for which you will personally qualify depends on a combination of factors, including both today’s average mortgage interest rate and your own credit (FICO) score.

5. Apply to multiple home loan lenders in order to find the best rate:

To increase your chances of qualifying for the lowest-possible home mortgage rate, be sure to apply to at least 3-4 mortgage lenders. Only then can you be sure you have secured the very best rate.

Consider these 5 tips as you investigate the current home loan rate in the context of historical trends.

Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen won the pole on the FIA Formula-1 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Nürburg, Germany.

Kimi’s rival Fernando Alonso split the two Ferraris and will start between Kimi and Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton suffered a serious crash in the third qualifying session after his tire broke in Schumacher‘s S-curve and he found himself out of the track running at a tangent to the safety wall. Race officials confirmed that Lewis had been “conscious and speaking”. Still, there are reasonable doubts about his fitness for the race Sunday.

BMW Sauber team drivers 4th and 5th, Mark Webber from Red Bull-Renault 6th, Heikki Kovalainen from Renault 7th and Toyota‘s 8th and 9th.

Before this incident Lewis was fifth, but dropped two the tenth place and will probably lose more with the car change if he’ll participate in the race. It seemes that his incretible series of 9 consecutive pole finishes have come to an end.

The race will feature Marcus Winkelhock, the German driver replacing Christijan Albers in Spyker.

This year Israel turns sixty and it has embarked upon a campaign to celebrate its birthday. Along with technology writers for Slate, PC Magazine, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Aviation Weekly, Wikinews was invited by the America-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry to review Israel’s technology sector. It’s part of an effort to ‘re-brand the country’ to show America that there is more to Israel than the Palestinian conflict. On this trip we saw the people who gave us the Pentium processor and Instant Messaging. The schedule was hectic: 12-14 hours a day were spent doing everything from trips to the Weizmann Institute to dinner with Yossi Vardi.

On Thursday, the fifth day of the junket, David Saranga of the foreign ministry was able to arrange an exclusive interview for David Shankbone with the President of Israel, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shimon Peres. For over an hour they spoke about Iranian politics, whether Israel is in danger of being side-lined in Middle Eastern importance because of Arab oil wealth, and his thoughts against those who say Israeli culture is in a state of decay.

The only crime I committed was to be a little bit ahead of time. And if this is the reason for being controversial, maybe the reason is better than the result.

Shimon Peres spent his early days on kibbutz, a bygone socialist era of Israel. In 1953, at the age of 29, Peres became the youngest ever Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Forty years later it was Peres who secretly gave the green light for dialogue with Yassir Arafat, of the verboten Palestine Liberation Organization. It was still official Israeli policy to not speak with the PLO. Peres shares a Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzak Rabin and Arafat for orchestrating what eventually became the Oslo Accords. The “roadmap” that came out of Oslo remains the official Israeli (and American) policy for peace in the Palestinian conflict. Although the majority of Israeli people supported the plans, land for peace was met with a small but fiery resistance in Israel. For negotiating with Arafat, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shouted at Peres, “You are worse than Chamberlain!” a reference to Hitler’s British appeaser. It was during this time of heated exchanges in the 1990s that Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a Jew who thought it against Halakhic law to give up land given by God (Hashem).

Peres is the elder statesman of Israeli politics, but he remembers that he has not always been as popular as he is today. “Popularity is like perfume: nice to smell, dangerous to drink,” said Peres. “You don’t drink it.” The search for popularity, he goes on to say, will kill a person who has an idea against the status quo.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Shimon Peres, the President of Israel.

Giving birth is one of the greatest gifts that has been given to mankind. Most of the parents-to-be are getting their selves prepared for the coming of their new born child by hosting birth announcements.

Though it can be stressful at times, planning a baby birth announcement is altogether fun and exciting. Financially, the host of the event (usually the parents) must know how much budget they will have to allot for the said event. In this way, they will be able to get an estimated amount of money to spend for their party. Parents could ask help from party planners for them to be guided with the financial budget, for the photo birth announcement cards and invitations, and for the kind of party theme that will better suit their taste.

Also, in planning a baby birth announcement, the host must know the number of guests to be invited. Birth announcements are not like any other party events that you can invite everyone in the neighborhood. It is considered as one of those special parties wherein closest friends and relatives are usually the ones being invited to share the happiness with the new parents.

An invitation card is one of the most important parts of planning a birth announcement. Parents must think about the theme and proper wordings that they will have to incorporate into their birth announcement cards. In writing for the invitation details, the host or hosts (parents) must keep in mind that it is a must to include some basic details about their child. Remember that this is an event for your new born baby, not for you as parents. DO NOT include the experience that you had during giving birth; this is not necessary for your invited guests to know. Just keep it simple and brief.

An example for a proper wording would be this:

It’s a Boy!

Introducing our new born child

Amos Raphael

He was born last Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Weighed 7.5 lbs, 6 oz

Length: 18 inches

Waiting with welcoming arms

Marvin and Arleen Smith

It will also be great if parents would spare a little budget with photo shoots for their little angel. The picture can be used for making photo birth announcement cards. This is one unique way of making a more personalized invitation card for the most anticipated event of your lives. In making personalized photo birth announcement cards, you may want to visit several companies’ sites that offer the said services, like SimplyToImpress. These companies will help you in making your own photo birth announcement cards without much cost.

When it comes to selecting food, it will be practical to buy or choose finger foods because they are easy to prepare and come in many options. Since birth announcements must be simple yet elegant, it is not advisable for this kind of party to serve heavy foods, like main courses in a buffet style theme. Another good thing about this kind of set-up is that it costs less, and you will be able to buy something for your guests like souvenirs for them to remember the event. Photos birth announcement cards will be great or handmade crafts will also do a great job.

Considering your finances in order to host an event that spotlights the birth of your precious baby will prove to be a worthwhile endeavor. Fun-filled memories with your baby are a one-of-a-kind experience that will have a big impact in your lives as parents. From thinking for the party’s theme to the preparation of making a photo birth announcement card up to the actual event will sum up into a whole new adventure of fun and loving moments.

Officials said at least fifteen people were killed in an attack on a teachers training college in the Northern Nigerian city of Kano by a group of armed gunmen on Wednesday. Over 30 others were wounded.

News agencies have reported while there has been no claim of responsibility, suspicion will likely fall on the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram. The group has previously targeted Western-style schools within the country, including past attacks on secondary schools.

According to official reports, police first approached the group in the area of the school, concerned about their unusual activity, and the attackers engaged police in a firefight. The attackers gained entry to the school and started throwing bombs.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan described the incident as a “dastardly attack”. He has already declared a state of emergency in three northern states, and is being criticized along with the country’s armed forces for failure to prevent extremist attacks.

A police spokesman said police killed two attackers at the scene.
