A new study amongst doctors in the United States on the use of placebos—pills with no medical effect—shows that almost half of the questioned practitioners prescribe placebos, most of them within the last year.

The majority of 466 faculty physicians at Chicago-area medical schools interviewed by a research group of the University of Chicago stated that placebos are useful to calm a patient down or to respond to demands for medication that the doctor disagrees with, i.e. “to get the patient to stop complaining”.

96 percent of the physicians surveyed believe that placebos can have therapeutic effects. Close to 40 percent stated that placebos could benefit patents physiologically as well as mentally.

Twelve percent of surveyed physicians think that placebos should be banned from clinical practice. Among the doctors who prescribed them, one in five said they outright lied to patients by claiming a placebo was medication. But more often the physicians came up with ways to explain like that “this may help you but I’m not sure how it works.”

The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of U.S. doctors and medical students, tells its members that “[p]hysicians may use placebos for diagnosis or treatment only if the patient is informed of and agrees to its use.” The research, published in Journal of General Internal Medicine this week, is the first major U.S. study of doctors on the use of placebos since 1979.

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

A volcanic eruption started yesterday in south Iceland at or near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The first signs of the eruption were seen between 23:00 and midnight GMT. It is still not clear where the exact location of the eruption is but it appears to be on Fimmvörðuháls.

People living in the area are being evacuated. Police have closed the roads into the area and a state of emergency has been declared. The eruption is expected to result in flooding if it is under the glacier, but fortunately it appears to between Eyjafjallajökull and another glacier, Mýrdalsjökull, reducing the danger of flooding. It is reported that the eruption can be seen as far away as from Vestmannaeyjar. So far the lava flow is viscous and thick.

There is also a danger that this eruption could trigger another eruption on nearby Mt. Katla, which is an off-rift volcano beneath Mýrdalsjökull. In the past, eruptions at Eyjafjallajökull have triggered eruptions at Mt. Katla. If Katla does erupt, the effect would be far more significant than that of the current eruption, as lava could melt the ice at the top of the mountain, causing the potential for massive flooding.

The air carrier Icelandair has diverted flights which were destined for Iceland as a precaution, due to the risks to aircraft of flying into volcanic ash. A notice to airlines prohibits flights within 120 nautical miles of the volcano.

Iceland is a volcanic island situated atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the juncture of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Who wouldn’t want a flat stomach? Or wouldn’t anybody want a firm stomach seen on model’s body on television? Many people want that kind of stomach however many people complain that they have a belly fat. Others even call it love handles, pot belly, or spare tire. But whatever it may be called, people don’t want it and they try to find ways how they will be able to get

In getting rid of belly fat, a person should eat a balanced diet. The foods that you eat should be low in cholesterol. This is a general fact known to many who wants to lessen the body fat. However, the foods that you eat should be right and not simply low in cholesterol. Eating healthy foods that give you less calories than those that you actually burn will help you reduce the excess fat and in getting rid of belly fat. Also, eating fewer foods that have high sugar content will lessen the fat in your belly. Eating right is the first step to be done in getting rid of belly fat of a person. However, this should be done in moderation. It is healthy to starve your body only to a certain extent. After a certain point, it may cause damage to some important body organs like the central nervous system. Belly fat is also called beer belly. And another way to cut it down is by drinking less beer or permanently stop drinking beer will help in reducing the fat in your belly. Drinking beer is bad for the health mainly because of its caloric content. Another effect of drinking beer is the inflammation of the pancreas and the liver. Drinking too much beer also causes bloating and may even be more damage causing once drinking beer is accompanied by sweet and sugary liquids like soda. The next step is to engage in exercise. Doing crunches, sit ups and other exercises that develop abdominal muscles may give you the abs that you like. However, exercises that involve the whole body like the cardiovascular and aerobic exercises would give faster results in getting rid of belly fat. These exercises would burn the calories in your body and since you are eating a balanced diet that has fewer calories, the body will use up the stagnant energy in your body, and normally it is stored in the belly. Also, everyday walking can help you cut some more pounds. The exercises concentrating in a person’s waist will develop the abdominal muscles. However, the exercises that involve the whole body and the low calorie diet will help the abs to show up and lessen the fat stored in your body. Lastly, to maintain a flat abs and slim waistline, it is important that the person will be consistent in doing his exercises and in eating the right foods. Exercises should be done regularly and not simply when the person have the time. If the schedule is not enough to engage in exercise, then the person should do something with it and give time to exercising. This will help the person reach a flat abs that he or she likes to have and maintain it.

Two Palestinian families who have been living in East Jerusalem since 1956, were evicted from their homes on Sunday after an Israeli court rejected their appeal filed against the eviction. The eviction comes after increasing international pressure on Israel to stop settlement activity and end home evictions.

Israeli security forces entered the homes at 6:00 a.m. (local time) and forcibly removed the family and international activists who were also living in the homes. At least 19 children were among those removed. Al Jazeera reports that a family was beaten with batons as they tried to get back into their house. JTA reports that Jewish families moved into the homes shortly after the Palestinian families were evicted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid biblical claim to the areas of East Jerusalem and has stated that Jews have the right to live anywhere in the city. Although Jerusalem is internationally recognized as occupied territory, Israel continues to evict Palestinians and instead build Jewish only apartments in the area, an action which is considered to be illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel has plans for 350 new apartment buildings in East Jerusalem. U.N special coordinator for Middle East Peace, Robert Serry, condemned the evictions as “totally unacceptable”.

The international community, including the United States, has called on Israel to stop settlement activity and allow for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Get specialist help

The Dispute Resolution or review process is complex and a solicitor or other specialist will be able to:

— Advise on your prospects of success in challenging a decision

— Prepare written submissions

Following the introduction of the National Framework in October 2007, there are now two Dispute Resolution stages:

— Local resolution

— Independent review panel

The Dispute Resolution process can only address whether the National Framework and Guidance have been applied correctly in your or your relative’s case. Concerns about the type of care or treatment, or the location of the care package, need to be dealt with through a separate process.

Ask for a Primary Care Trust review – Local resolution

Apply for a review in writing checking for deadlines or forms. If the request is due to an increase in your relative’s needs, do not be put off by deadlines. Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are supposed to deal promptly with review requests, although it can take months. The PCT review may involve one or more of the following:

— An internal panel to review assessment documents

— A neighbouring PCT reviewing documents

— An invitation to next of kin (or someone with Enduring Power of Attorney) to attend the Panel review meeting

— An invitation to next of kin (or someone with Enduring Power of Attorney) to express in writing their understanding of the individual’s needs

If you are asked to give your opinion, issues to raise include:

— Errors or misunderstandings by the original assessor of your relative’s needs.

— Needs that are already being met that have been overlooked.

— Supervision, prompting and other specialist interventions needed for dementia or mental health problems.

— Evidence/opinion of complex need and healthcare in any recent hospital assessments (for instance before being discharged).

— Social Services’ care plan or assessments indicating the number and quality of nursing or other interventions required.

— Your own detailed records of the events and illnesses that lead to your relative’s need for care.

— Evidence from a GP or other professional where they did not give an opinion in the original assessment.

Ask for a strategic health authority referral

If the PCT review maintained the original decision, you can ask for the case to be referred to the Strategic Health Authority’s Independent Review Panel (IRP). You can also apply direct to the IRP if the local resolution stage is taking too long. The IRP has an advisory role and can only offer ‘guidance’ on:

— The ‘validity’ of the PCT’s decision

— Whether the PCT correctly applied the National Framework

However, PCTs should accept IRP decisions in all but exceptional cases.

The IRP should let you have the documents they will use to consider your relative’s case and ask you for information about their health needs. However, this information is often only provided a week or so before the hearing. It is advisable to meet your solicitor or adviser well in advance of receiving this information, to prepare your written submissions. You can update them when you have the information.

The panel hearing:

— Consists of three people

— Will normally include a nursing adviser

— Is relatively informal as part of a fact-gathering and decision-making process

— Is private – you and the PCT should be interviewed separately.

You will generally be notified of the decision in writing within four weeks. If the IRP decides your relative should be entitled to NHS continuing healthcare funding, the award should be paid retrospectively to cover the ‘dispute period’. The recommendation should include a date from which the funding should have been awarded. It may be that the IRP says your relative did not meet the criteria for free care at the time you brought the challenge, but that funding should be allowed for a period after that date.

Seek a referral to the healthcare commission

If the IRP upholds the PCT’s decision, you may have a basis to refer the case to the Healthcare Commission. The Commission can review complaints where the complainant is not satisfied with the local decision or where the complaint has been unresolved at local level for six months.

Try the health service ombudsman as a last recourse

There are limitations to the type of issue the Ombudsman can investigate. It can say, for example, whether a request for a continuing care assessment was unreasonably refused. Or whether the rationale for the decision was fair, clear and based on evidence. Or whether the proper processes were carried out. While the Ombudsman cannot make a substitute decision, it can remit the case back to the Strategic Health Authority or PCT for a proper and fair determination.

The National Framework applies to continuing healthcare funding in England. Different guidance operates in Wales and Northern Ireland. Anyone seeking funding should consider seeking specialist advice. A different approach applies in Scotland where nursing and personal care costs (but not accommodation costs) are funded at set levels.

See Accessing Continuing Healthcare Funding Factsheet for help with applying for continuing healthcare funding.

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.
