There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Renting a good tent is vital when planning an outdoor wedding. While tents can offer a cozy and personal touch to an outdoor wedding décor, they also protect you and your guests from unfavorable weather conditions. Tents are more flexible in comparison to existing facilities since you have a lot of option in regard to where and how you want the wedding to be. Below are tips on how to choose the right wedding tents.

Before you choose the size of the wedding tents, you need to know how big your guest list is, the banquet and the dance floor. Getting a small canopy is not hard but for large canopy sales, specialized companies have bigger sizes. If the guests are going to be sitting on long tables, you will need a big tent. A band or dance floor will require some extra space. It is therefore ideal to have all these details in mind when looking for a tent.

Know the theme of your wedding; this can add creativity to your tent choices. There are professional services who offer tents which are customized according to themes. Summer weddings will need light tents with a clear roof top while a beach wedding party should have a strong tight tent in order to resist the pressures of wind and it should also be big enough to give people a great view.

Consider the style of the tent. Ask about the details of construction so you know in advance what you are getting. Most tent canopies are vinyl with aluminum support frames. The quality and style of the tent should be visually appealing especially for photography.

Arranging a variety of tent canopies on one property for different uses is the best way to entertain guests throughout the different stages of your wedding. For dinner and dancing, you should opt for roomy oval, a small round tent for cocktails and a medium oval for the outdoor ceremony. Other tent uses will include bridal preparation, lounge sitting and a play area for kids.

The side of the tent is a standard item and should not be removed. You do not know when the temperature will drop or a breeze will pick up. You can install the sides and then roll them up, leaving the tents open to the landscape until the sides will be needed.

With the above information, you are sure to get the right type of wedding tents for your special day. For a specialists opinion contact the professionals at canopymart.com. Selling everything from tents to canopies they’re sure to have what you’re looking for.

Mario López is favored to win the third season of American television series Dancing with the Stars, with 3:1 odds of winning, but close on his heels is actress Vivica Fox, with four-to-one odds. López is perhaps best known for his role on Saved by the Bell, and currently stars on soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. Gambling site BetBet released odds on its website recently.

Monique Coleman (High School Musical), Joey Lawrence (Blossom), and Harry Hamlin (Clash of the Titans), each with six-to-one odds. Hamlin’s wife, Lisa Rinna, was a contestant in the second season of the series. Singers Willa Ford and Sara Evans each rank 8:1.

It is unknown how the firm decided the competitor’s odds; none of this year’s dancing has been previewed publicly, let alone for the press.

Dancing with the Stars enters its third season on September 12, at 8pm, with a two-hour season premiere. The series was a surprise hit for ABC, who added the program as a summer filler, with no large hopes for its success. Based on the British series Strictly Come Dancing, the series has been produced in 20 countries.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Monday, March 20, 2006

Buffalo, New York —On Saturday March 18, citizens in Buffalo demonstrated to make their voices be heard. The protest mounted by people opposed to the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal took place on the proposed site at Forest and Elmwood Avenues.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a 72-room, seven-million-dollar hotel proposed by Savarino Construction Services Corporation. The hotel would require the demolition of at least five buildings (1109-1121 Elmwood), which house several shops and residents. Karl Frizlen, an architect with Frizlen Group, designed the hotel. Although the properties are “under contract,” it is still unknown if Savarino Construction actually owns the buildings. It is believed that Hans Mobius, a resident of Clarence, New York and former Buffalo Mayorial candidate, is still the owner. The hotel is expected to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Despite the cold weather, at least 40 people showed up to walk the picket line for 2 two hours.

Clarence Carnahan, a Buffalo resident, supplied signs that citizens could use during the protest. Some of the signs said, ‘No vacancy, No hotel,’ ‘No tell hotel,’ ‘Hans off’ and ‘Our neighborhood, our choice, no hotel.’

“The concern is they are going to tear down established businesses that have been here for years,” said Charles Leist, a protester.

“We’re fighting to the bitter end. We’re hoping that we can squelch this. We don’t think we can, but we’re going down kicking and screaming,” said Patty Morris, co-owner with Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel at 1119 Elmwood. Don Apparel is a vintage clothing and collectible shop and has been at the same location for nearly 14 years.

The city’s Common Council is expected to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 2:00 PM in Council Chambers, on 13th floor in City Hall.

The Planning Board is expected to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, March 28, at 8:00 AM in room 902 on the 9th floor of City Hall.

Even if the Common Council approves the proposal, the Planning board will get the final say in the matter.

So far, no other protests are scheduled. Organizers say they will wait until the Common Council votes before organizing any more protests.

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has sold about 54,000 policies and collected premium of over Rs 213 crores within just four days of the launch of its new plan LIC Samridhi Plus. VINAY KUMAR SINHA, LIC zonal manager (north), spoke to THE PIONEER about its new policies and business plans for this fiscal. Edited excerpts:

As a Zonal Head of the Northern Zone, what are your business plans for this monetary?

We are already in the last month of the current monetary. North Zone has already garnered in excess of 6,500 crores as First Premium Income and procured more than 40 lakh Policies. We hope to achieve the target assigned to us by the fiscal end. I m confident as all my 17 Divisions are geared up for the job at hand.

The activisation levels of our agency force are at their highest and the existing mix of products available is also conducive for achieving the budget on both the Premium & Number of policy counts.

I m happy to share that our Pension & Group Schemes Unit of North Zone has already surpassed its yearly budget by more than 100% by garnering over 8,990 crores premium and more than 21 lack lives.

What are the new methods that LIC has offered recently keeping in mind the changing needs of the people?

LIC has been very responsive as far as designing of new products is concerned. We were the first to come out with a ULIP product Pension Plus in the new ULIP rule. Recently two new products have been introduced Bima Account – I & II and LIC Samridhi Plus.

While Bima Account-I & II is a non-ulip guaranteed returns product suitable for investors looking for guaranteed return over 5 or 10 years. Samridhi Plus is a ULIP that guarantees the highest NAV over 100 months. Both products are extremely unique and very suitable to the current scenario. Though interest rates are at a reasonably good level at present, one can not be certain how long this will last. Both the above products are guaranteeing certain returns over a medium term. This feature is absolutely unmatched. LIC has already sold 1.08 lakh Bima Account-I & II policies with premium of approximately 80 crores.

The customers have also shown confidence in our latest unit linked product Samridhi Plus. LIC has sold about 54,000 policies and collected premium of over Rs 213 crores within just four days of its launch. Since, Samridhi Plus would be available for a limited period only, our efforts would be to mop-up a sizeable premium through this plan in the coming days.

How has the business moved after the new ULIP strategy came into force in September?

The new ULIP strategy have worked to the advantage of the customer which is how it should be. Charges on products have been reduced and the customers are the beneficiaries. This has made things very aggressive in the market.

All I can say is that with the experience of LIC’s Asset Management, our ULIP products are most competitive in the market and going by the sales, the customers too seem to have realized this. Endowment Plus a ULIP plan, launched on 20th September, 2010 has been appreciated by the customers. LIC has sold over 11 lac policies of this plan and collected a premium of more than Rs 5,600 crores.

Has there been more tilt towards ULIPs considering the lower returns provided by other instruments?

I would say that the demand for any product is determined by the need of the individual. There are people (especially youngsters) who prefer pure term assurance (only risk cover) products which are products that have no investment element. Then, there are others who prefer a combination of the two.

ULIPs are preferred by those who have a higher risk desire. Naturally, the returns on ULIPs are higher. When you talk about return in the context of Insurance Products, what is important is that extra element of risk cover that an insurance policy comes with. So returns from insurance products can never really be compared fairly with other instruments.

What kind of distribution channels do you wish to expand in the remaining part of 2010-11?

At present, more than 85% of our business comes from our agents channel. LIC has been very innovative as far as this channel is concerned e.g. there is a Chief Life Insurance Advisor scheme wherein an agent(doing a certain minimum required business) can become a CLIA and recruit other agents and mentor them. This way our reach increases various.

Also these CLIAs have the authority to assemble premium thereby reducing rush at our Branch Cash Counters. Such premium collection offices are called Premium Points. In our Zone we have more than 3000 Premium Points at present.

Then there are other channels like the Bank Assurance, Micro Insurance (micro policies to be distributed through NGOs etc.) and Direct Marketing. All these channels are doing well in our Zone and are totally focused on achieving their respective targets.

What steps you are taking to check the erosion rate of Agents?

At present our Zone is having more than 1.87 lakh agents. The high attrition rate of agents is a matter of concern to us. Besides extensive training the Corporate Office has introduced two schemes for their retention. The Swavalamban scheme of Government of India has been extended to our non-club Agents. Besides, we have introduced a group superannuation scheme Samvardhan for our agents having annual commission of Rs 1 lakh or more with a view to assist them in creating a sizeable corpus during their productive years which can be used to provide pension in old age. This should help in retaining and professionalizing our agency force.

At 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Eastern Time (2045 UTC), the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States. Its cargo: a US$100,000 Tesla sportscar, the personal property of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, which he hopes will soon be in its own orbit around the Sun. This is the most powerful rocket since the Saturn V of Project Apollo was retired in 1970. The rocket is meant to follow a course called a Hohmann transfer orbit.

“It’ll be a really huge downer if it blows up,” Musk told the press the day before the launch, but went on to say, “If something goes wrong, hopefully it goes wrong far into the mission so we at least learn as much as possible along the way. I would consider it a win if it just clears the pad and doesn’t blow the pad to smithereens. That’s four million pounds of TNT equivalent so there’s probably not going to be much left if that thing lets loose on the pad.” The car was equipped with a fully space-suited dummy, cameras to monitor its trip into space, a copy of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and a radio blasting Space Oddity by David Bowie.

The Falcon Heavy has a total of 27 engines and stands 230 feet (70.1 m) tall. According to SpaceX, the Falcon Heavy uses three boosters, the same kind as the company’s smaller cargo rockets. After the rocket exited the Earth’s atmosphere, two of these boosters detached from the main body of the rocket and, in a first for space technology, were successfully guided back down to the landing pad about ten minutes after launch. The third was to have landed on a drone ship, but missed by around 100 yards (about 90 meters) and hit the ocean “at around 200 miles per hour,” according to Musk. The reusability of the boosters makes an enormous difference in the cost of the launch.

Even the relatively heavy-hauling U.S. Space Shuttle program, which was closed in 2013, did not rely on rockets as powerful as those used in Project Apollo, the program in which NASA, the U.S. Government space agency, sent manned missions to the Moon in the 1960’s and 70’s. Most recent space projects have focused on smaller, lighter machinery, such as Scaled Composites’ SpaceShipOne in 2004, which reached space after being carried part of the way by a carrier jet instead of launching from the ground. As of last week, the most powerful rocket in use was the Delta IV, operated by the United Space Alliance. It costs about US$435 million per launch, while SpaceX says the Falcon Heavy will cost US$90 million per launch.

NASA is also working on a heavy-duty rocket, the Space Launch System, but there have been delays.

Charles Eugene Flowers and Stephanie Bassitt, who run Love Demonstrated Ministries in San Antonio, Texas, United States, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault for tying a girl to their van and dragging her behind it on her stomach.

The victim had stopped running with a group of campers, after falling behind. She says Bassitt yelled at her while Flowers tied her to the van.

The girl was treated for injuries on her stomach, legs and arms. She reported that this was the second assault. Flowers and Bassitt remain in jail on US$100,000 bond each.

Love Demonstrated Ministries is a 32-day Christian boot camp for girls whose parents feel they are “at risk teens”. Such camps have raised controversy before.

An organization called the International Survivors Action Committee maintains a list of U.S. organizations where numerous abusive incidents have been reported; however, their list should not be taken as exhaustive. Neither Love Demonstrated Ministries nor New Horizons Youth Ministries, which has an alumni site describing abuse appeared.

The defending champions, the United States women’s national basketball team, are perceived as the Australian Opals’ main competitors. In the last three Olympic Games the Opals got silver medals. In each of these cases the United States got first place. Coach Carrie Graf said “thinking about the US too soon in inappropriate”, “Our focus is first and foremost, game by game winning our pool”. Amongst the Australian Opals’ competitors in the pool are Brazil, Russia, and Great Britain. Carrie Graf said Great Britain “will put up a fight on home turf” but there is a “world class [AIS] facility” and “world class medical support staff” supporting the team.

Australian Opal player Penny Taylor recently suffered injury from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, meaning she cannot play Olympics this year. In regards to the situation player Lauren Jackson, who is going into her fourth Olympics, said “you would never wish that upon anybody.” She says as a team they have to “move on, move through that” and “come together” to pick up their offence and defense. Despite the loss of one of their key players she says “we definitely have the talent there” and the team is all “on the same page.” She feels “pretty confident” and speaks of “very exciting” times ahead. Jenna O’Hea is going into her first Olympics with the team. She is still “pinching” herself and says she is taking it “day by day”.

A typical day at the camp might start with a 7.00am – 8.30am breakfast at the AIS Dining hall, before one and a half or two hours of court, gym, or swimming training. The middle of each day might consist of media meetings, medical checks, team meetings, and time to practise shooting. Around 12.00pm, the players meet to eat lunch and recover from the morning. The afternoon typically consists of more training, and some scrimmage games. Players usually finish around 7.00pm for dinner, and perhaps a massage.

The nineteen players in attendance this week at training camp were Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Rohanee Cox, Cayla Francis, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, Kristen Veal, Carly Wilson, and Hanna Zavecz. Basketball Australia has named fifteen players that are to attend the second phase of the camp: Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, and Hanna Zavecz.

You might have looked at these structures and thought on how can they be safe on these pipes that are getting stacked onto each other. And, how can they actually work like this? These structures are called scaffoldings, and it is designed to assist with reaching heights when building. These are some interesting information to ensure that you are getting to know the construction industry’s ladder; scaffoldings.

What are scaffoldings?

First of all, you might be wondering what are scaffoldings? You have seen it before, but you don’t know what it is called. And, this is why you don’t know what we are talking about.

Scaffoldings are the pipe structures that they are using on construction sites. These structures are secure and strong and able to keep people safe while building on high levels. It is a lot safer to use than normal ladders when a building is in progress. There are different types of scaffoldings, but the most common ones, are the round steel pipes that are getting installed on top of each other. And, loose work platforms are then put onto a place to stand on.

Why is it used in construction sites?

Why is this the number one piece of equipment that is used on construction sites? And, is it really as safe as what people are saying?

The great thing about the scaffoldings is that it is a mobile work platform. It can be installed and packed up when it needs to be. It can be taken from one place of the construction site to the next. The scaffoldings can be made higher and can be made lower. It depends on the height needs of the building. The higher it is, the more dangerous it can be if this isn’t installed correctly and safely.

Scaffoldings and safety

Now, the question about scaffoldings and safety. Is this really as safe as what everyone is claiming? It depends on the type of scaffoldings that you have and the way it is installed. For high-quality scaffoldings, and installed correctly, this is totally safe to use.

The only thing that you need to know is that there is some safety equipment that workers need to wear and needs to have on them if they are working high up on the scaffoldings. They can still fall off and injure themselves really badly.

Installing it correctly is essential

This leads us to the installation. The installation of the scaffoldings is essential. Some might think that you don’t need to install it perfectly because, within a day or two, you are going to break down the scaffoldings again and build it in another area at the building.

However, it just takes a second for the scaffolding to fall and to injure people. Innocent people that are walking past the construction site, or workers that are working underneath the scaffolding. This is why inspections should be done on a regular basis to see that the scaffoldings are in perfect condition and installed correctly.

Scaffoldings in the construction industry. Something that most contractors can’t work without. And, it is important to get all the information before you just start using any type of scaffolding that might not be as secure and safe as other scaffoldings. With the right precautions, the scaffoldings are a great way to ensure that the building can proceed on all levels of the building.
