I had an unofficial phone call from Gay Talese last Tuesday. He had just flown back from Colombia and he was cranky. “I’m happy to do an interview with you,” he said, “but what the hell could you ask me that’s not already out there? Have you even bothered to look?!”

“Jeez, Mr. Talese, lots of things,” was my response. I lied. The truth is that when I call people to interview them, I do not have a set of preconceived questions. My agenda is to talk to them and gain a sense of who they are; to flesh them out as humans. To find out what they think about the world around them at that moment. With Gay Talese I had little interest in talking about Frank Sinatra Has a Cold and with Augusten Burroughs I had little interest in discussing Running with Scissors. I want to know what they think about things outside of the boxes people have placed them in.

With a memoirist like Burroughs, even this is a challenge. What parts of his life he has not written about himself, other interviewers have strip-mined. When we met for dinner at Lavagna in the East Village, I explained to Augusten this issue. I suggested we make the interview more of a conversation to see if that would be more interesting. “Instead of you in the catbird seat,” I said, “let’s just talk.”

We struck an instant rapport. What set out to be an hour and half interview over dinner had turned into four hours of discussion about our lives similarly lived. I removed half of the interview: the half that focused on me.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s conversation with writer Augusten Burroughs.

Paul Hester, drummer for the popular 1980s band “Crowded House”, was found dead in a Melbourne park Saturday.

An ambulance service spokeswoman told the Sydney Morning Herald that ambulance officers arrived at Elsternwick Park on Saturday afternoon. They reported Hester had “attempted suicide” and suffered “strangulation”. The 46-year-old-father-of-two was last seen walking his two dogs in the popular suburban park near his home on Friday evening.

Hester had a history with bouts of depression, but seemed to be coping well following eight years of therapy. Friends told the The Daily Telegraph, however, that he suffered a recent turmoil in his love life. Firstly, there was the end of his romance with long-time partner and mother of his two daughters, and then a parting last December with New Zealand singer Kashan, whom he planned to wed in May. There appeared to be no indication he was distressed when he left the house to walk his dogs.

Hester, from Melbourne, Australia, was a founding member of the internationally popular group Crowded House. Previously, he was in the band “Split Enz” with Crowded House leader Neil Finn during the early 1980s. He quit Crowded House in 1994, two years before the band broke up, and became a television personality in Australia with his own prime-time show, then working mostly as a freelance drummer [e.g. for Tarmac Adam]. He had his own music chat show, Hessie’s Shed, on Australian TV in the late 1990s, and also had a recurring role as Paul the Cook on the children’s program The Wiggles. He also hosted the successful Australian cable music channel MAX’s Sessions series.

Three Australian citizens and a New Zealander died when the chartered light aircraft in which they were travelling crashed on Misima Island off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The plane, a Cessna Citation with five people on board, is said by locals to have overshot the runway in poor weather, before crashing into trees and bursting into flames.

The fifth person, a New Zealander believed to be one of the pilots, is undergoing treatment for heavy bruising. The crash was confirmed by the Australian Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, who said that officials of the Australian Consulate would be travelling to the crash site on Wednesday. The presence of the 2 New Zealanders on board was confirmed by the New Zealand High Commission in Port Moresby.

Jerome Peniasi, The acting Chief Executive of PNG Ports said the Australians on the plane were working with a company called Australian Reef Pilots near Misima Island. “We are aware of the accident, but we still don’t have much information as communication has been difficult”, he said. The Managing Director of Australian Reef Pilots, Craig Southerwood confirmed that one of the dead was a 61-year old marine pilot working for the agency.

A court in England, UK has jailed a policeman for ten months after he was convicted of defrauding his car insurance company.

Police Constable Simon Hood, 43, arranged for a friend who dealt in scrap metal to dispose of his Audi TT, then claimed it had been stolen.

Hood had been disappointed with the car’s value when he tried to sell it two years after its purchase in 2008. He arranged for friend Peter Marsh, 41, to drive the vehicle to his scrapyard in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Marsh then dismantled the vehicle with the intent of disposing of it, but parts were later found wrapped in bubblewrap at Ace Tyre and Exhaust Centre.

Marsh picked up the TT from outside nearby Gorleston police station. Records show mobile phone conversations between the conspirators that day in March, both before and after the vehicle was reported stolen. The pair denied wrongdoing but were convicted of conspiring to commit insurance fraud after trial.

The fraud was uncovered after Hood told former girlfriend Suzanne Coates of the scheme. It was alleged before Norwich Crown Court that he had confessed to her in an effort to resume their relationship. Coates said that after the pseudotheft, Hood told her “he didn’t want to look for it. He said it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, which I thought was a bit strange.”

You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison

Shortly afterwards Hood suggested they should become a couple once more, she said; she challenged his version of events regarding the car: “He said he did it but I couldn’t tell anyone. He said he did it with Peter. Peter had a key and took the car away and it was going to be taken to bits and got rid of so it was never found.”

Hood was defended by Michael Clare and Marsh by Richard Potts. Both lawyers told the court that their clients had already suffered as a result of the action in mitigation before sentencing. Clare said Hood had resigned from the police after fifteen years of otherwise good service and risked losing his pension. “It is not a case where his position as a police officer was used in order to facilitate the fraud,” he pointed out. “His career is in ruins.” Hood is now pursuing a career in plumbing.

Potts defended Marsh by saying that he, too, had already suffered from his actions. His own insurers are refusing to renew their contract with him when it expires and his bank withdrew its overdraft facility. His business employs 21 people and Potts cited Marsh’s sponsorship of Great Yarmouth In Bloom as amongst evidence he supported his local community.

Judge Alasdair Darroch told Marsh that he did accept the man was attempting to help his friend. He sentenced Marsh to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service. He was more critical of Hood:

“As a police officer you know the highest possible standards are demanded by the public. You have let down the force. You knew throughout your career that policemen that get involved in serious dishonesty get sent to prison.”

Everyone knows that the air we breathe outdoors is heavily polluted but often the same people do not stop to think that perhaps the air inside their home is also polluted, in some cases it can actually be worse than the air outdoors. People who are forced to spend a great deal of their time in the home for one reason or another, improving the air quality is of paramount importance.

Those companies that are deeply involved with air quality testing in Massachusetts suggest that any homeowner can take some steps to improve the air quality.

Before you can take remedial action you must identify the major categories of substances that can have a seriously detrimental effect on the air quality in your home:

 • Allergens: Any substance that causes an allergic reaction to a human is considered an allergen. Common allergens are pet hair, pollen, dust mites, mold, mildew and rodents.
 • Irritants: These are substances that are an irritant to the respiratory system but do not elicit an allergic reaction. These substances can be paint, stains, lacquers, tobacco smoke, cleaning chemicals and pesticides.
 • Chemicals: Although dangerous chemicals are not often found in the home, they can have a serious impact if they are. Such dangerous chemicals are radon and carbon dioxide, both of which can be detected when air quality testing in Massachusetts is undertaken.

Do not hesitate to consult with your doctor; they are very knowledgeable when it comes to issues which involve air pollution.

Ventilation: Proper ventilation is key to reducing the build-up of pollution. This doesn’t take much; open your windows, use exhaust fans and window air conditioners.

Tobacco is an especially toxic irritant, so is second hand smoke. To improve the air quality in your home; do not allow smoking indoors.

Rid your home of dust mites: These mites survive from consuming the dead skin that is shed by the residents in the home. To help eliminate this creatures change your bed linen weekly, lower the indoor humidity to 50 percent or lower and do not let pets get on the furniture.

If there is evidence of mold or mildew in your home take immediate corrective action. Mold moves on air currents and the spores can spread it to anywhere where there may be damp areas.

Simply being aware of what is in your home and how it is being used can go a long way to eliminating the threat of pollutants which can be dangerous to some and miserable to all.

If you are serious about the level of pollutants in your home then start with air quality testing in Massachusetts. Contact Synergy One Solutions, Inc. and talk to the experts.

On July 19th, 2006, Philadelphia police took a 21-year old student, Neftaly Cruz into custody for photographing the arrest of an alleged drug dealer in his neighborhood.

Roused by commotion in his neighborhood, Cruz saw the street outside his house lined with police vehicles and proceeded to photograph the event with his camera phone. Soon after, one of the police officers walked onto his property, grabbed his hand, placed him in handcuffs and drove off with him. Gerrell Martin, a neighborhood woman, witnessed and confirmed these events. She recalls the officer said to Cruz while restraining him, “You should have just went in the house and minded your own business instead of trying to take pictures off your picture phone.”

According to Cruz, “They threatened to charge me with conspiracy, impeding an investigation, obstruction of an investigation. They said, ‘You were impeding this investigation.’ (I asked,) ‘By doing what?’ (The officer said,) ‘By taking a picture of the police officers with a camera phone.'”

After detaining him for over an hour, Philadelphia Police finally released him with a warning that, according to Cruz, “if the supervisor was there I wouldn’t be a free man and that he is letting me go because he felt that I was a good person.”

In this article I intend to take you through basics of an electric cars battery like capacity, range and charging. Capacity of a battery is measured in Kilowatt hours, just like your home electricity is measured to bill you. If you are planning to buy an electric car then battery capacity is one of the key features you must look into. A manufacturer often provides you with rated capacity of battery, which may be like 24Kwh or 54Kwh. You must keep in mind that, unlike fuel tanks, you cant fully access rated capacity of a battery. In order to keep battery life and prevent it from other possible damages, manufacturers employ a state of charge system. This state of charge system never lets the battery go out of charge and never let it charge to 100%. This leaves you with an access to only 60 to 70% of rated capacity. When you compare battery capacity of various models, this fact should be kept in your mind.

Next consideration is charging. The most important aspect of charging a battery is cost associated with the process. Cost varies with the location you select to charge, the time you select (peak time or off peak time), voltage of the charger and size of your battery. You can save a lot of money if you charge your vehicle during night time (off peak time). Location is another factor that affects cost of charging. Example: Electricity costs are high in Miami compared to other locations. The more the size of battery, the more time it will take to charge and hence more cost. Charging from a 120 volts charger and 240 volts charger has considerable difference in time taken to complete the charging process. The final aspect associated with charging battery is losses incurred in the form of heat dissipation while charging. Example: If 12Kwh was all it took to charge your battery completely then only 10Kwh actually went to battery. 2Kwh is lost as heat!

Range is the final aspect of an EVs battery. Its the same as mileage how far an EV goes with a fully charged battery and thats what range is all about. The problem with range is no one can exactly predict an EVs range. It depends highly on temperature variations, quick acceleration by driver, frequent braking, way of driving etc. It all affects battery performance. So if a manufacturer claims 100 miles range then you may expect 70. In some turn around conditions you may even get 120+ miles range! It depends highly on many external aspects as I noted above. Range may even vary with in similar model EVs. Example: Two Nissan Leaf EVs may give different ranges. The only way out there to predict an EVs range is by testing, by trial and error. Take your EV through different roads, different conditions, different style of driving and then note down the range for each different cases. This will give you an idea about your electric vehicles range in general.
